Rainy Night Walk

Grandma came over and picked up the boys this evening so she could have all the grandkids (emma was there) for awhile (zuri stayed here with us).  They have a favorite past time at Grandma's of making funny videos on her computer, so that's what they were going to do there.

When she brought them back, it was raining, so the first thing Sage asked for was help finding his rain jacket.  I got up from my cozy spot in bed (blogging :) to help him and we found it right away.  He asked if I would come out with him, and there was no way I was going to pass up an invitation like that!  So, we both geared up and went out into the pretty, still, wet and rainy night (it was about 9:30).

He asked if I wanted to go for a walk.

"Sure!  But we can't go too far, because Zuri is asleep and I don't want her to wake-up and I'm not there and then she'll disturb Dad's sleep."

"Ok, where do you want to walk to?"  he says.

"Um, we could walk down the street a little ways."

"Hey!  How 'bout we go over to the alley."  (he was referring to the parking lot that's just at the end of our street.

"Ok, that sounds good,"  I say.

He offers me his hand and then asks me why moms always want to hold their kids' hand when crossing the street.  I explain to him that it just makes us feel better when we have our kids close to us, and that also, if he were to trip or needed help getting out of the way really quickly, that I would be able to do those things if I'm holding is hand.  He said, "If a car was coming really fast, I would just shove my kid outta the way."  "Well, yes, that would work if your kid was right beside you, but what if your kid was way behind you or way in front of you?"  "Ohhhhh,"  he said with a new understanding.

So, we play around in the parking lot for a while, enjoy the city view, the shiny lights shining from far away.  He asks me to pick out which tower I think is the tallest.  He shows me the one he thinks is the tallest and explains that it actually looks the smallest right now to us, because it's really, really far away, but that it's actually the tallest one...way out there.

Then he says, "follow me".  And we splash through some parking lot puddles and go over to a small landscaped area which has some large chunks of slate and a light shining up at a US and state flag.  He notices how the rain looks when the drops are caught in the lights beam, and points it out to me.  We watch it for awhile.

I suggest we go check to make sure Zuri is sleeping, so we follow a small stream out of the parking lot and Sage notices it gets deeper as it flows out.  He then turns around and sees that everywhere he's just walked is all bubbles now.

We come home and he thinks we should just hang out in the backyard now, so we do.  When we get back there he says, "what do you wanna do?  should we just talk a little bit?"

"yes, that would be great," I say.

He finds the driest spot he can for us to sit and then he says, "should we play I Spy?  or 20 questions?  You pick."

I pick I Spy and he tells me I can go first.

When it's his turn to choose something for me to spy, he says, "do you want me to go easy on you?"

Laughing aloud, "Ya, I think you better go easy on me."

I say something about feeling nervous having Zuri in the house sleeping without me, and he assures me that I can just go check on her.  So, I go and check... still snoozing with Dad, all's well.  I scoop us each a spoonful of Nutella and go back outside and we just wander around the yard a little, which turns into looking for Ruka, because we can hear her faintly meowing, but we can't figure out where she is.  (turns out, she was in the attic, but I guess we could hear her through the walls.  weird.)

So Grateful that I chose to say yes to a request for a late night walk in the rain.  Never a dull moment.

(as i wrap this up, he's here beside me explaining to me how the seasons work.  gotta go and listen fully! :)
